South Padre Island is a resort town in South Texas well known for its fishing. It offers just about every kind of saltwater fishing you could want. There numerous guides and charters available for deep sea fishing, offshore, near shore, surf, wading and bay fishing.
The most popular fishing here is for reds in the shallow flats of the Laguna Madre and South Bay. The reds or Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) are known to readily strike at artificial lures, spoons, cut and live bait. They are easy to hook and usually will give a very hard fight. Landing a big red is so fun an exciting it can be additive.
Almost equally popular is fishing for Speckled Trout (Cynoscion nebulosus) which are sought after for their delicious light mild flavor and ease of cleaning and filleting.
For near shore fishing the Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) is one of the most sought after for sport fishing. Their fight is dramatic, marked by leaps from the water and intense shaking of the body. They are not edible but are mainly sought for the great fights that will thrill and challenge any fishermen.
The Island also offers a nice variety of activities for everyone in the family. Play on the beach, go golfing, enjoy the afternoon at Schlitterbahn Waterpark, ride horses, drive dune buggies, go dolphin watching, dine at some of the many South Padre restaurants or enjoy cocktails while watching the beautiful sunsets over the bay. You'll find plenty of other activities on South Padre Island besides deep sea fishing.
